In the 4 storey Salt or Julius Caesar Tower in the Tower of London complex is an extraordinary piece of graffiti. In the second storey is a complex horoscope and inscription:
“Hew Draper of Brystow made thys spheer the 30 daye of Maye anno 1561.”
The book The monuments of East London claims “he was an astronomer imprisoned for sorcery and magic.”
The same source mentions another graffiti “Hew Draper of Bristol, the 27 day Janry…” but provides no image or information.
But the website ‘Stuff about London’ claims there is no record of his execution or release but the same month as the carving, the Lieutenant of the tower reported he was very sick. Did his horoscope predict this?
