War Memorial, St Cuthberts RC church, Durham

There are lots of public memorials to both World Was in Britain. They are often central to the annual commemorations of the end of the First World War.

But this one, hand written by the parish priest has other stories within or upon it. At the bottom is an admission by the priest that his list is incomplete and welcomes any more names to be included.

But there is another tragedy here. The list was torn by a former soldier who apparently could not bear to have the war commemorated. How many other men avoided the anniversaries, the commemorations of the horrors they were forced to remember each year?
