Northwick Church, South Gloucestershire

Entrance, Northwick burial ground

This tower is all that remains of the church and parish near Aust where the ferry is shown on the Bob Dylan album & Scorsese film.

Bob Dylan at Aust Ferry

It is dedicated to St Thomas but fell into decay and was badly restored in 1842. The tower fell and was rebuilt at the west end, but the restoration was hopelessly bad. It was restored and re dedicated in 1913 at a cost of £700.

Strangely there is no record of the rest of the churches ‘ history. Registers show occasional serious floods of the nearby Severn River including December 1910 when water poured through almost every house in the parish. When electricity arrived, houses had plugs high on the walls; furniture and floor coverings were moved upstairs as the waters rose.

It is now a quiet, well tended graveyard which and still accepts burials. A lovely peaceful spot overshadowed by large trees and full of birdsong.
